Open Letter to Captain Paul Watson & Sea Shepherd.

Dear Captain Watson,

On August 13th, 2017, the Ecuadorian navy detained in the Galapagos Marine Reserve, by shear coincidence, the Chinese vessel Fu Yuan Leng 999 carrying 300 metric tons of fish; the majority being sharks, including the endangered Hammerhead. According to Ecuador’s environment Minister, Mr. Tarsicio Granizo, the fact that the illegal cargo included baby sharks, suggests that these were poached within the Marine Reserve.

While the capture of the Fu Yuan Leng 999 is important as it draws international attention to the plight of sharks in an UNESCO World Heritage site, it is especially disconcerting that, and as we speak, an additional 100 Chinese vessels are depleting fish stocks, a dozen miles outside the territorial waters of the Archipelago. The Chinese have been emboldened by ex-President Rafael Correa’s decision to reduce the previous 200 mile territorial limit to a mere 12.

The relationship between Sea Shepherd and SELVA-Vida Sin Fronteras was established by our common interest and obligation to fight the illegal trade in sharks; as reflected in your open letter to President Correa. I believe we gave our very best  working successfully in this direction, despite ex-President Correa’s decision to halt operations with us and the Environment police,  after it was discovered that the representative of his party in Manabi formed part of the shark fin Mafia.

Presently we are losing the battle of keeping shark fins out of Chinese soup bowls.  Subsequently I call on you, to consider taking direct action in the international waters surrounding Galapagos; especially with the fast patrol vessel Sea Shepherd purchased in the Netherlands. I sincerely believe that Sea Shepherd is the only Organization with the strength, conviction and guts to embark on such a crucial mission.  You can count on all the support SELVA-Vida Sin Fronteras can provide in Ecuador.
