China’s Andes Petroleum: An insult to Injury in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
THE AMAZON PINK DOLPHIN’S VOICE
On 25/11/2013, SELVA-Vida Sin Fronteras published the article “ Andes Petroleum commits another crime against Nature& Humanity in the Ecuadorian Amazon;
Our oil monitoring patrols uncovered that the Chinese company had raised several hectares of primary forest in and around SELVA- Vida Sin Fronteras’ Aguas Negras Reserve, located in the most sensitive region of the Ecuadorian Amazon; namely the headwaters of the Amazon River Basin. Especially disturbing was the fact that Andes Petroleum is intending to construct toxic waste pools, the overflows and dumping of which, would directly affect the Siona Nationality located down river and contaminate one of the world’s most bio diverse regions, breeding grounds of the endangered pink fresh water dolphin.
SVSF President Mariana Almeida immediately filed a complaint in the Ministry of Environment. This led to the field inspection that confirmed the horrendous crime committed by Andes Petroleum.
Unable to deny that material evidence incriminating the oil company, Andes Petroleum lawyers spoke with our legal representation last week. Their offer is an insult to injury.
The Andes Petroleum lawyer apparently suggested that we consider two proposals. The company appears to consider paying $ 150 for gasoline to transport the numerous trees they cut down. Is Andes Petroleum suggesting that the sale of this lumber would financially compensate the damage they inflicted?
Secondly, it appears that Andes Petroleum would plausibly be interested in purchasing the Amazon Reserve for Peace, Aguas Negras, for $ 30,000. This would clearly be convenient for them, because without a presence of SELVA-Vida Sin Fronteras in the area, their environmentally disastrous operations could continue without scrutiny. We should also keep in mind that Andes Petroleum is bidding to perforate for oil in the Yasuni National Park. Their activities in the Cuyabeno serve as an ominous example of what the future holds for the Yasuni.
However our pledge to UNESCO and donors led by NCP’s David Radcliff remains firm. SELVA-Visa Sin Fronteras will not sell lands in our custody in the Amazon Rain Forest. These lands will be protected for eternity.
Consequently the Chinese Andes Petroleum is forcing us to legal action. We will not relent in this direction and are confident that justice will prevail. The facts speak for themselves.
While it has not been our policy to request donations, legal procedures and lawyers fees are expensive and Andes Petroleum is well aware of this, believing that their economic power will serve to bury their illegalities.
SELVA-Vida Sin Fronteras kindly asks you to support us. If you wish to stop crimes against humanity and the environment in the Ecuadorian Amazon, please consider purchasing the vegetable ivory designs, which symbolize our CUYABENO & YASUNI- LET IT BE Campaign.
