Tar Sands Pipeline Gets Whitewashed

Despite President Obama’s recent tough talk on confronting climate change, his State Department has just issued a review of the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline that ignores its disastrous impacts on our climate. Producing tar sands oil generates three times as much global warming pollution as the production of conventional crude. This climate-wrecking pipeline would also drive more destruction of the boreal forest and endanger communities along its route with toxic spills. Urge President Obama to deliver on his promise to address climate change and reject this flawed review.

TELL PRESIDENT OBAMA TO DELIVER ON HIS CLIMATE PROMISE!

The State Department has just issued a terribly flawed environmental review of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that papers over its far-reaching impacts on climate and our environment. Send a message asking President Obama to reject the review, send the State Department back to the drawing board and fulfill his promise to address climate change.

MESSAGE SUBJECT:

Reject the State Department’s review of the Keystone XL

Dear President Obama:

In your State of the Union address you vowed to tackle catastrophic climate change. So I am deeply disappointed and distressed that your State Department has produced an environmental review of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline that ignores the climate impacts of extracting the dirtiest fuel on the planet. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy and other deadly weather events, our government should not be whitewashing the very real and disastrous effects of climate-wrecking projects like the Keystone XL.

Please reject the State Department’s review and direct Secretary of State Kerry to undertake the kind of comprehensive analysis that you have long promised. That review should include the climate impacts of expanding tar sands development, the major refinery pollution it will produce here in America and the grave risk to our communities from toxic pipeline spills.

Your administration should be in no rush to make a decision on a project that will endanger our land, our water and our climate. Please make sure that the first major climate decision of your second term is one that protects our planet, not one that fuels more climate destruction.

As we move toward a clean energy future, there is no room for the most destructive oil on the planet. Please send your State Department back to the drawing board.

Sincerely,

Mariana Almeida
